GHI has partnered with Hivos Southern Africa to manufacture environmentally friendly sanitary pads using banana pseudostem fiber.
More than 7 million girls in South Africa do not have access to sanitary pads which leads to an average of 4 - 5 days per month of absenteeism from school, with a high rate of school drop-outs.
Having no access to sanitary pads also leads to higher rates of infections, stigma and discrimination and gender based violence.
The project has the following elements:
- Mobile messaging to educate girls on Menstruation and Feminine Hygiene
- A Social enterprise to empower women - manufacture of the sanitary pads.
- Environmentally friendly products that are 100% biodegradable.
